I spent my weekend reading book 8 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series of which I was anxious to get through. After all, I had waited almost a year to read John Matthew and Xhex’s story.
I open my book, excited and looking forward to what is to come. Immediately, I’m let down. We have to drone through pages of Darius’ journal entries and ramblings (John Matthew is Darius reincarnate) before we start the present story of our favorite mute J.M. getting Xhex’s name slapped on his back in some sketchy tattoo parlor.
The story picks up where Rehv’s left off, Xhex kidnapped by Lash and missing, J.M. having a complete mental breakdown over her kidnapping and J.M.’s guardians, Quinn and Blay having their little to do’s over Blay’s love for Quinn.
Cut to random story about a haunted house in the Carolina’s and some paranormal investigators. (Admittedly, I skipped over all that crap until the last chapter as it appears to be there only to boost page count.) Now we move on to Lash and his ridiculous over confident cockiness. He of course has Xhex trapped, rapes her repeatedly and runs off to daddy Omega to boost his cockiness even more.
Daddy disowns said cocky son, Xhex escapes, J.M. comes to the rescue and they get it on repeatedly for several chapters while they come to terms about their “feelings” for each other.
I won’t ruin the story for anyone but I will say this, as with most of the books in the series there is a standard theme of something dramatic, such as a kidnapping, an escape, sex, argument, detachment, in love again then everyone is happy. I don’t mind the monotonous theme so much however, the crap tossed in the middle absolutely ruined this book for me. Pages of Darius’ ramblings, the haunted house, the constant mental ramblings of J.M… I was able to get through this book so fast because I ended up skipping over these things. Too much blah blah blah and not enough story.
Maybe my expectations are too high. I feel like this book was a let down.
